Freshwater Friends: Beaver, Frog.
British Columbia’s West Coast is famed for its marine life. Killer whales, sea otters, and salmon are icons of the Pacific Northwest as much as the ocean itself. With the spotlight on the sea, however, it’s easy to forget the aquatic West Coast denizens which make the icy mountain lakes and streams their home; creatures like the beaver and the frog.
Beaver
Throughout North America, the beaver is known for his industrious nature and impeccable work ethic. Dogged and determined, this Canadian icon symbolizes creativity, co-operation, persistence, and productivity.
Frog
Amphibious by nature, the frog embodies adaptability and polymathy (skill in multiple areas). In Northwest Coast First Nations culture, the frog symbolizes wealth, abundance, luck, and rebirth.
This mini Canadian Northwest Coast-style totem pole was hand-carved from yellow cedar and varnished with two light coats of boiled linseed oil. The base is made from western red cedar and is bottomed with genuine Harris tweed.
The base measures 7.5 x. 7.5 cm (3 x 3 inches), and the total height is 27 cm (roughly 10.75 inches).
This piece was hand-crafted by a western Canadian aboriginal artist.
