Tricksters: Raven, Coyote.

Many of Canada’s First Nations maintained that contact with the divine was most easily achieved through laughter. Accordingly, tricksters feature prominently in many First Nations legends.

Raven

The raven is perhaps the most important animal in Haida and Tlingit mythology. Being the namesake of one of the two major moieties to which all Haida and Tlingit people belong (the Raven Clan and the Eagle Clan (Eagle/Wolf in the case of the Tlingit)), the raven was considered by the Northwest Coast people to be mischievous, curious, and highly intelligent. The raven features prominently in some of the Haida and Tlingit nations’ most important myths and legends, and in nearly all stories he exhibits an irrepressible desire to alter the status quo. In succumbing to his desire, he often inadvertently benefits mandkind. The raven represents humour, creativity, change, and mischief.

Coyote

To the east of the Rocky Mountains, on the foothills and prairies of western Canada, the Blackfoot nation had their own trickster, the coyote. The coyote is closely associated with Napi, or Old Man, the Blackfoot Creator. Like the raven of Haida and Tlingit mythology, the coyote of the Blackfoot is mischievous, highly intelligent, and ever eager to meddle in the affairs of his superiors. In many Blackfoot legends, the coyote is a benevolent being sympathetic to the plights of man. In other stories, the coyote’s reckless exploits serve as cautionary tales about the consequences of bad behavior.

This mini Canadian Northwest Coast-style totem pole was hand-carved from sun-tanned yellow cedar and varnished with two light coats of boiled linseed oil. The base is made from western red cedar and is bottomed with genuine Harris tweed.

The base measures 7.5 x 7.5 cm (3 x 3 inches), and the total height is 26.5 cm (roughly 10.5 inches).

This piece was hand-crafted by yours truly, a western Canadian aboriginal artist.
