Lords of the Forest: Owl, Wolf.
Every ecosystem has its apex predators, and the forests of western Canada are no exception. In the wilds of boreal Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, the owl dominates the forest canopy, while the wolf reigns supreme on the forest floor below.
Owl
In Coast and Interior Salish tradition, the owl is associated with wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. Traditionally, the owl is also affiliated with death and the afterlife, and serves as a symbol of the souls of deceased relatives. Members of the Cree nation believed that the owl’s hoot was a convocation to the spirit world.
Wolf
Venerated for its keep intellect and hunting prowess, the wolf embodies courage, perseverance, and strength. The wolf, being fiercely protective of its young and a practitioner of lifelong monogamy, is very family oriented, and represents loyalty, kinship, and teamwork. Similar to the owl, the wolf is considered by some First Nations to be the spirit of a deceased ancestor.
This mini Canadian Northwest Coast-style totem pole was hand-carved from yellow cedar and varnished with two light coats of boiled linseed oil. The base is made from western red cedar and is bottomed with genuine Harris tweed.
The base measures 8 x 8 cm (roughly 3 x 3 inches), and the total height is 25 cm (10.25 inches).
This piece was hand-carved by a western Canadian aboriginal artist.
